Answer:
Well..

The Sony Bravia series of LCD would be the best one suited to your needs.

Check them out.

Sony LCD are the Best and have good support and are built to last.

Toshiba Plasma is the 2nd best out there besides the Pioneer Elite Plasma.

Sony
Toshiba
Mitsubishi
Hitachi
Pioneer Elite
All of there make good quality products. Anything else is JUNK.
Tigerdirect usually has great prices and very dependable/quick delivery. Return policy is ok for most items. About a $1000 for a Panasonic 42" plasma right now.
Personal choice but when you consider remember the following. The screen life is longer on an LCD screen (approx 25 yrs) compared to about 7-10,000 hours for a plasma. Also make sure the TV is capable of getting 1080p resolution which is what Sky is transmitting in (higher resoloution) and has two HDMI ports (one for your HD box and the other for your HD DVD or games console when you get around to buying one). You can also get screen burn with a plasma tv (eg if theres a logo in the corner when you change channel you have a "ghost" image left. Ive got LCD with an 8ms screen response time and a 1000/1 contrast ratio. The higher the contrast ratio the better on LCD. Hope this helps and I havent confused you too much :)

Craig
These technologies have converged in quality and price for that size screen. Balancing pros and cons other than possibly price make this similar to the paper or plastic question at the grocery store.
10000 hours is a lot of time to use any electronic component before it is obsolete so burnout may be trivial. If the LCD is similar in price or price is trivial buy LCD. If you reconsider and decide on a larger TV a plasma may be your only choice.

LCD Olevia 542i looks to be a good deal

Panasonic TH-42PX600U is high quality

consumer reports has a nice free forum for this topic also:

well i would wait, because there coming out with better technology in a shorter amount of time, if you wait a year, you will get a very good tv for cheap, right now people are just confused as to what is good and bad. Its crazy.
If you are looking in the LCD realm i would go with the Sony Bravia based sets, the sony KDL40V2500 would be a great choice. If you are looking at a plasma i would go with Panasonics th42px600u
