Both are "fixed pixel displays". That is they both create the picture by each single pixel getting the information and displaying it on screen. An LCD tv uses liquid crystals for each pixel that twist to allow light through and creates the picture (like those on your laptop screen or ipod screen). Plasma TVs use little gas filled chambers that light up when an electrical pulse activates them. There are 3 colored chambers and depending on the color, each lights up.
If you want to know WHICH to buy... use this
If you like fast action movies or sports, you will definitely want a plasma. If you sit further away and like to watch movies and want to save money, go for the LCD.
Another note. If you play video games and are trying to save money, you might want to stay away from plasmas. While the high end plasmas have fixed the problem, less expensive models can burn in static pictures (like scores).
Another note. LCDs that will come out in 2008 will have faster "refresh rates". Just know that means that the feathering that happens from fast action will be decreased and they will do better with sports.
