I have a 1991 magnavox projection TV...please HELP?
Answer:
2007 - 1991 = a 16 year old TV set.that's past it's prime life expectancy.
BUT..you may just need to have the coolant replaced because the liquid is crystallized.
To check for this..<laughs> I suggest a TV tech, but if you are CAREFUL you can check this yourself.
Remove the back panel, there is another tilted or flat piece of fiberboard that keeps out the light.remove that.you should see 3 circular glass lenses sitting side by side.Turn on the TV and carefully stick your head into the TV to LOOK DOWN INTO the lenses..
The RED one should be clear as the green and blue ones should also..
But if the COOLANT IS BAD.you'll see a fogginess in the Green one and most likely nothing but a big blurry, cloudy blue glow from the blue one...
That red one is what your others should look like.a very very "eyeball burning" BRIGHT picture!!
When you come out of there remember to douse your Eyebrows with water...Unless you like looking like AKU in Samurai Jack...<laughs> Ok.I'm just kidding!
But you should see a picture at the bottom without any foggy look to the liquid.none at all...
NOW..don't try to fix this yourself.you can do a lot of damage to the TV..CALL a TECH, expect about $400 to $500 to fix BOTH green and blue coolants.
the cooling fluid in the blue and green projection tubes is bad, fungus has grown in it making the normally clear fluid cloudy. the reason why the picture is red it because the cloudiness of the fluid in the blue and green tubes is keeping all the light from being projected onto the screen leaving you with a mostly red picture. To change the fluid will cost you about $250 to $400. for a set that old I would just toss it and get another one.
