I just purchased a HDTV and my cable co tells me I need a box for $50.00 installation plus $6.00 per month.?
They say I must pay the $50 because the local cabel co no longer carries the box and installer comes from far away.
Is this legit? Is there another way to get box? Should I forget the whole thing and maybe go with satellite?
Please answer if you understand my options.
Answer:
I recently upgraded to HDTV cable boxes through Comcast in NJ. In contrast, I did not have to pay the installer to bring out the two boxes. Comcast charges $5 a month per HDTV box. For an additional $1 per month (special offer), one of the boxes is also a DVR.
I'm not sure that I would spend an extra $16 a month per set right now, because the number of HDTV channels is still limited. Before you sign up, take a look at the channels they offer in HDTV format.
I had a mixed experience with satellite. It worked great for the first year, and I saved about $40 per month. After that, I had a lot of reception problems and had to constantly move the dish around. Finally, I gave up on it!
You dont have to get HD signal to watch regular tv, but if you want to take advantage of the tvs capibilites (HD) then yes you need to provide it with HD signal. ie upgraded cable/sat box.
Go with sat, they have more HD channels. Also if you have a ATSC Tuner, with an outside antenna you can also pick up the local digital channels and HD channels also.
i doubt there is any other way to get a new box. but i wouldn't think you would have to sucribe for HDTV services.
if you go with satellite, i heard Direct TV is getting new HDTV line-up. i'm not sure what the cost would be.
I have a HDTV too and i don't sucribe to any HD channels. With the satellite the picture quality is already better than cable.
You must remember that you don't need your Cable or Sat. to enjoy HDTV. If you just buy the HD antenna then you will get channels like ABCHD, CBSHD, FOXHD and so on for free. The only problem is they only offer HD programs during the prime time hours and on weekend days. NASCAR on FOXHD and NBA on ABCHD are all free through your HD antenna. So if your are not a big TV junkie then that should be enough in my opinion
I have io digital cable in new york and i don't have to pay extra for the HD service. All I had to do was go in and exchange the box and thats it.
