I think they want you to be careful for the first 100 hours - but you really should read your manual to be sure.
I believe Vivid is too bright for normal use and so I would recommend Standard as a starting point. However I'd also look for a calibration DVD (Disney DVD's have a THX calibration section) and use that to set up brightness, color, tint, picture & sharpness. You might also try searching for reviews on your set as some of them do talk about optimal settings. The setting should not have to change for the first 100 hours or afterwards.
As for the first 100 hours, I belive the biggest deal is making sure you dont have static images on for a long time to prevent image burn in. That includes watching programming in 4:3 with black bars on either side.
I would suggest buying a DVD that allows you to calibrate the sharpness, contrast, brightness, and color. They sell it at the electronic stores or just go online.
