The room size wouldn't matter. It's the sitting distance (sofa to TV). Sitting Distance (inches) / 2.5 = TV Size
Let's say 10 ft. or 120 in. is your sitting distance.
120 inches / 2.5 = 48 inches
This would mean that you want a 50 inch TV.
For you, it will probably be around 42 inch LCD or plasma TV. Since PS3 is high definition, you want to by a HDTV with 720p or 1080p.
I wouldn't recommend getting a tube TV, which it sounds like what you were shopping for.
I'd go with a color set.
