Whats hdmi?

I just bought a ps3 do I need to hook this up. Cable didn't come with it. Spent $600 and now I have to buy this.

Answer:
HDMI stands for High-Definition Multimedia Interface. Due to copy protection, you'll need an HDMI cable if you want to be sure you'll be able to watch Blu-ray movies in HD. You won't see any high-definition at all without either an HDMI or DVI cable (HDMI is highly recommended over DVI).

As long as it's certified HDMI, all the cables are basically the same, so I wouldn't bother with an overly-expensive one.
"The High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is an all-digital audio/video interface capable of transmitting uncompressed streams. HDMI is compatible with HDCP Digital Rights Management technology. HDMI provides an interface between any compatible digital audio/video source, such as a set-top box, a DVD player, a PC, a video game system, or an AV receiver and a compatible digital audio and/or video monitor, such as a digital television (DTV).
It is a modern replacement for older analogue standards such as RF - Coax, SCART, Composite Video, Component Video, VGA, DVI-A, and RCA connectors, and the consumer electronics replacement for older digital standards such as DVI (DVI-D & DVI-I). In the computer world, HDMI is found on many devices and few video cards, and the adoption is rapidly increasing."
HDMI is for high defination gaming you dont need to buy the cable you can use the AV cables that came with the PS3, but if you have a HDTV, then i would reccomend it cus i also have a PS3 and if you get the cable, the picture is way better. They are 35 dollars at WalMart, but they are only 3ft. long
HDMI is a standard for transmitting 1080p high-definition video and 7.1 channel surround sound audio over a single cable. HDMI is supported by a large variety of devices, including HDTVs, home audio components, DVD and HD-DVD/Blu-Ray players, HD (cable, satellite and over-the-air) set-top boxes, the PlayStation 3, and more. HDMI is also backwards compatible with the video-only standard of DVI, which is commonly used in computers and computer monitors.

You can get HDMI cables from a variety of places, including the online wholesale store monoprice.com and a very inexpensive one ($20) from Xtreme Mac (http://store.apple.com/1-800-my-apple/we... These cables are just as good as and much cheaper than the $70+ ones from companies such as Monster Cable.
