Is philips the solely tv near ambilight?
And what does contrast ratio be a sign of with the tv's what is it a index of someone please explain :-)
Answers: Philips is the only company near the built-in color-shifting backlight. Reviews have be mixed as to whether this is anything more than a gimmick. Philips is also coming out with a next-generation to Ambilight call Auera, which puts different colors at different spots along the edge of the peak. First link below for a picture. If you love this stuff Philips is clearly the person in charge; there is one European company (ARE) that make a $250 add-on paraphernalia but it's a poor alternative.
Much of the benefit of ambilight can be gained by using a fixed-color backlight; this is done near a small lamp and a bulb of the proper color (6500K). See second cooperation below to related article.
As to contrast ratio, it is essentially a measure of the extent of brightness (from most dark pixel to full-bright pixel) that the TV can reproduce. Unfortunately, here is no standard way to gauge this properly and at some point well below the measured values it doesn't thing in real-world applications so it is not too dear to compare numbers between different sets (you can use the numbers to compare between models from the same company).
Good luck.
