When you go onto an AV channel on a TV where nothing is connected, why is the screen blue, not another colour?

This is random i know, but i'm sure there must be some story behind it. Why not choose green or red? Why blue? Just something i was thinking about randomly the other day and was wondering if anyone knew!

Answer:
Yes, blue may be a calming color, but that is not the true answer.
In fact, the answer is that most manufacturers chose that color (randombushmonkey was right about this) ... is a little complicated.

If you payed attention in highscool physics, you may remember that the additive colors of light are red, blue, and green. TV's work because of the additive properties of light. Those three colors happen to be the colors of pixels, and they are selectively added to create thousands of different shades of colors.

Besides that, the reason manufacturers chose blue instead of green or red to show is because it is the highest on the EM spectrum and therefore has the shortest wavelength of the three. Those three facts make blue the lowest-voltage color to generate on the whole screen.

So if you leave your screen on 24/7, remember that you're saving a couple of pennies every month thanks to the manufacturers of your TV. :) Or you could save another penny by following "realist 2006's" advice.
Yeah it's blue on your TV, but on some it's black, on mine it is green. This is basically a message from your TV saying 'not recieving a signal'
In theory a blue screen is easier on the eyes than any other colour ! . The blue screen can also be switched off so that with no signal the screen then shows ' Snow " , if you are on TV input . Just go to the TV menu and you should find the option. Cheers Pete
The colour is chosen by the manufacturer and is programmed into the TV's software, so when an AV channel is not receiving a signal it produces that colour to mask any interference or noise on the screen (Same for 'ordinary' channels). On older sets it would just be a blank screen, but I think this panics people slightly - makes it feel as though the TV isn't working correctly, especially if they accidentally pressed the AV button.
It's restfull to the eyes!
Blue is the most psychologically calming colour. As most TV sets are designed and produced in the far east, they put a lot of thought into creating Carma. Just like the fact that most Japanese cars appear to have a happy face (by design).
