Forget LCD. OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) is the best technology. If expensive.
Ok, so it is not LCD, but the contrast is fantastic (around 1 000 000 : 1 - see link 3). It can be very thin, a display can be thinner than 1 cm. (again, link 3)
It conserves electricity exceptionally well, and - last but not least, it has a very high life expectancy.
Sony is mass producing OLED displays now (see link 2). Won't be cheap yet though.

Panasonic, because they have created the biggest in the world, 103 inch, but make sure the contrast ratio is the highest too. that'll make the best LCD
