Do i really need a fancy power bar/surge protector when buying a hi-def TV?
So before you know it, the good deal advertised in paper isnt nearly as good when you take all these other things into account.
Which of these accessories do i really need?
Answer:
I have sold TV's at three different stores, all of which offer the items you mention. My opinion may differ from others but I will tell you what I would buy. I never buy extended warranties. These are the biggest profit making items that stores sell and they push salesmen to sell these more than any other item. I must admit, though, that the only thing I would consider buying a warranty on is a plasma. Still, I think my instincts would steer me away from the warranty. I do believe in quality cables without getting extravagant and if you knew the world of high-end cables you would realize that none of the cables offered at Best Buy are extravagant. I would get these. I have mixed feelings about the expensive line conditioning surge protectors (even though I own two). Monster offers a lifetime warranty on these and they really mean it. Also, these are great protectors of expensive equipment. As for the line conditioning (reducing the noise) I am not sure. I use to sell those like hotcakes with a device that detected such noise. It made a horrible sound when plugged into the wall. Plug the line conditioner into the wall and the device into the line conditioner and Silence. Some high end audio magazines recommend these and there are some line conditioners that sell for several times the price of any of Monster's. I cannot say that I have noticed a picture or sound improvement from using one but I have heard customers say it helped their picture and sound. Some people will also tell you that the power supplies in your electronic gear do much the same kind of conditioning. All I can say is I own two and would probably buy one for something as special as a plasma. Customers are frequently shocked at all the add-ons that go with their electronics purchase but many of these are worth while.
