Connecting a Laptop to my TV?

I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop and a Sony TV (both no more than 3 months old). I be wondering how I could watch movies from my laptop on my TV eyeshade. I`ve followed most of the instructions in my laptop almanac but it`s still not working. I`ve get the S-connection cable, audio (red and white...and what about the washed out one? just quit it unplugged?) There was something around pressing fn and f8 so I did that and it made my screen resolution slightly big.
I popped one of my dvds in and I can hear audio but no video. Any counsel to a not so tech-savvy girl?

Answers:    if u connect it via the svhs cable u need to engineer sure the tv is set to svhs as the input source. then u should see video and hear te audio. to be precise if you laptop has a svhs out. and within this case quit the yellow plug alone and simply connect the red and white to audio while the svhs is connected to the svideo input
i know your tv is new but it depends on the resolution reguarding the trait of the picture. Some Sonys have a VGA input .....a monitor input and you simply run a cable from the lap top to the TV. next you need a momo cable to dispatch the sound over .
