btw- i know that dtv's are mandatory in 2009 which is not the point, the cost is !!, *will ancestors still be able to buy a 32 inch dtv for $400 contained by 2009????
Answers: They make DTVs using the "big tubes". I be in Best Buy a few days ago and they have a while row of them. Walmart & Kmart have them also. They even get HDTVs using the "big tubes". OK, lets start calling them CRTs and not "big tubes".
Both analog TVs and DTVs enjoy been made beside all of the display technology, CRT, plasma, LCD, projection.
This whole transition from analog to digital TV is designed for maximum backwards compatability. A cheap $100 CRT DTV from Walmart will pick up adjectives of the broadcasts that a $3000 HDTV can. So will any old TV near a cheap ~$20 converter box.
Cable and satellite customers don't even need want a converter because those companies take perfectionism of converting the digital signal to analog ones.
That being said, within five years you might have trouble finding a exotic CRT TV. That's because the price of flat panel TVs keep dropping. When they start to approach the price of CRTs of matching size, who's going to buy the bigger, heavier, energy hogging CRT sets?

If you hold crummy fuzzy no name CRT set, this is the immaculate time to upgrade! Not to a new expensive HDTVs but by getting a top of the row used CRT TV dirt cheap. People are replacing them with flat panel and there isn't much constraint for the old CRT TVs. Add a ~$20 converter and see your TV broadcasts within DVD like feature. Yahoo! My kind of upgrade.

You may run into BS artists who claim that you hold to have a special "HDTV antenna" to receive digital broadcasts. Pure maketing hype. Analog and digital braodcasts use alike antennas. Some people will inevitability better antennas because DTVs can be fussy about signal trait.
Nobody has said for sure if they will stop producing CRT (Cathode Ray Tube -- Big Tube) television for HD, but here is an example of one tube tv that's currenlty being sold "Toshiba MD30H82 30" Widescreen Pure Flat CRT". It's almost $700.00 for this 30" tv. I picked up a 19" LCD HDTV for $380.00, but I probably could own gotten a CRT TV for much less.
The predictions are that CRTs will slowly be phased out.

The digital part is the tuner. Any type of display, CRT (what you refer to), LCD, plasma, DLP, and so forth, and so forth, can own a digital tuner. The picture itself will always be analog... because our eyes can't see digital.
