I have an hdtv. i want to know what the best possible connection is, for the best picture quility. i know there is hdmi, av, component, etc. Please Helpe

Answer:
OK, X-man is correct with his "Best to Worst List", BUT.

HDMI and COMPONENT are actually Equal in Quality..

You see, HDMI signal GETS CONVERTED to Component Signal before the TV can process it to be displayed. All TVs are like that.

The only REAL difference is the where the actual "Digital-to-Analog" converter is...HDMI is THAT converter!

So...HDMI has it's A/D converter 6 feet closer to the TV..does it make a difference??

ONLY if your Satellite/Cable box is 30 to 50 feet away from your TV and you're using a HDMI cable to feed the TV set it's signal.

That's because Digital signals do not lose high frequency details like Analog (component) signals do over long runs of cabling !!
Yep, Monster Cable is only IDEAL for Long runs, not the short 6 foot runs you see in most households.
And Digital signals only use pulses.Highs and Lows.Ones and Zeroes to create a picture.and since the signal is either on or off, there is no "in between"...it's not hard for a TV to know it's recieving an ON or a OFF signal..

That's why MONSTER HDMI CABLE makes me laugh when I see a customer proudly displaying it to me..
He could have spent that money on a Good Dolby Amp...or a subwoofer, and used a piece of Walmart Wire to get that GOOD picture..
HDMI or DVI. HDMI does video and audio. So, if you are using the TV's speakers, use it. If you have a surround sound system and that is also hooked up, use a DVI. However, the big question is why you can get. My cable company has a ton of HSMI boxes but very few DVI.
From best to worst, here are your choices:

1-HDMI
2-Component
3-S-Video
4-Yellow RCA video(av)

For the money you can't go wrong with "Component".
Enjoy!
HDMI is the best... period. I must point out one error above: "HDMI signal GETS CONVERTED to Component Signal before the TV can process it to be displayed. All TVs are like that."

That's not 100% accurate. In true digital display units, like LCD and Plasmas, there is no conversion back to analog... that would be ridiculous. Also, he's incorrect in saying that HDMI is converted to component in analog TVs, (such as his Hitachi). It's usually converted to RGB because component cannot drive the individual CRT guns and two conversions would be silly... it has to be RGB by the time the signal gets to the CRTs, so converting HDMI or DVI to component and then to RGB would be a waste of parts. Trust me... today's manufacturers are pretty careful about this stuff.

BTW, RGB and component are both fine for ANALOG HD, but fall short of the digital formats such as DVI-D and HDMI. in true digital displays, anyway.
If you use good quality , shielded component cables, the resolution will be pretty good. I found when I took my component ones off & put on the (in my case-HDMI to DVI ) cable, the picture on the non HD channels improved. I had to use DVI to HDMI, only because my TV has DVI & the Motorola cable box had HDMI. I got a Monster cable, new-10 ft. long, on Ebay. It cost $ 57.00 including the cost to get it into Canada when Ebay shipped it, & it would have cost $ 179.00 right at our Future Shop ! Mine was new & was here in New Brunswick, Canada, in 2 days.
go with component cables unless you have money you just feel like setting on fire the human eye cannot tell the difference between hdmi and component you can look it up on line it is true but if you ask a guy that sells hdmi cables he will swear I'm lying to ya and show you a piece of paper with allot of technical info and numbers on it that mean nothing to the human eye
