Ive owned both for several years presently and find them to be invaluable tools to keep my projector and my elder RPTV correctly tuned.
Get a THX certified DVD and use the THX optimizer included on the disc to set your display. It's a good tool and not expensive.
There are no thorny and fast rules and closely depends on your viewing conditions also.
Ideally blacks (brightness) and whites (contrast / picture) should be set as per the test similes but you can set it for the time being contained by such a way so that you don't miss out details surrounded by shadows and the details in whites don't look wash away. You can start setting your own settings by taking 'Cinema/Theatre' kind of settings as the non-attendance.
