My TV changes colour when it's near support beams in my house. Why?
I just got a new tube tv and positioned it inside of an alcove in my living room. Every time I bring it close to the opening (move it forward a few inches) both sides turn bright pink. If I turn the tv at an angle, sure enough the side closest to the beam has a wider pink band, and the one further away is thinner. I push it away and voila, it is gone. There are NO nearby magnets whatsoever. I've ruled that out. So...it is something inside of our walls.
I can't find anything on the internet about this, and no one that I have talked to knows anything. I am so confused!
My questions are...
1) What on earth could be inside of my wall to cause this?
2) How far away should my tv be to prevent it from permanent damage? (it has a turn of de-gauzing function, but I don't know if that offers complete protection). Could it be permanently damaged?
If anyone out there has heard of this please let me know!
Thanks :)
Answer:
I've heard it and seen it before..
Your framing in your walls has steel..and that steel has become magnetized over the years..
And since the TV has a magnetic deflection yoke on it, when you come close to the magnetized beams it distorts the magnetic field of the yoke..and you get off-colors..
I doubt you can demagnetize the framing in your home..too large.
It won't hurt the TV, but it can magnetize the set enough that it would require degaussing on a regular basis..
Your interior walls may be made of wood, which does not magnetize...
How far away? I can only guess, but I'll assume 2 or 3 feet would work in most situations
need new tv
My best guess, though not necessarily the right answer, would be that you have the wires for your electricity running through that area. When electricity passes through a wire it creates a (usually weak) magnetic field. Your TV may be unusually sensitive to that field if this is the case.
That's the only thing I can think of at the moment because it does sound like the same thing you'd get if you placed a magnet near the screen.
I'd say as long as your TV doesn't show any interference that it's probably at a safe distance. You could probably give a quick call to a local TV repair shop and tell them about it. They'd likely be able to tell you exactly how far your TV would need to be away from whatever is causing the problem.
beam construction is 'rcc'
reinforced cement concrete
that you mention support beam, meaning load bearing
the reinforcement is steel bars, which cause the magnetic interference
your tv should have had adequate shielding, which obviously is not
degaussing should help, but only for some time
call dealer & lodge complaint asap
let him come & check for self
no modern tv should behave in this manner !
< defective shielding >
besides as you mention, it's a new tv ... as age is another criteria & could deteriorate with age as the arking of the 3 guns > red, blue & green could start to vary & may need to be readjusted ... but sure not in a new set !
