If not, you can follow me in my decision which was to purchase a Sony Bravia LCD.
I've been a TV tech since 1979 and have labored over this issue long and hard for quite a while, now. Last July, I settled on an LCD for numerous reasons. Longevity, clarity, resistance to spot burn, less fragile, etc. etc.
Get an LCD. It uses less energy and doesn't have the problem of pixels burning on the screen. HD looks excellent too!
Although the risk is admittedly small, a Plasma TV is much more likely than an LCD to blow up
plasma is way better! Plasmas made today are stronger than the older ones that were made when when they first came out.
I like LCoS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) TVs

Assuming that your viewing environment is not a limiting factor…, if you want the full HD experience of a 1920×1080 HD display in a 42-inch display size then you will have to choose a display other than plasma. If 1280×720 is sufficient then - to put it bluntly - you will have some work to do [1][5] IF you want the most high definition TV for your money. First, for a relatively basic LCD and Plasma comparison please read my reply from the first link [2] under the 'sources' section below.
The MAJORITY of HDTVs being sold are not "full" HD displays. [3][4] Some people may not care but I personally find the abundant lack of "full" HD televisions or displays unacceptable. A consumer's best defense is to purchase a relatively inexpensive, high quality HD test disc such as Silicon Optix's new "HD HQV Benchmark" (not yet available but it should be released soon.) [5]
Also, you'll find extraordinarily well done and informative test comparisons of all of the major display technologies on Dr. Raymond M. Soneira's DisplayMate Technologies Website. [6] I also highly recommend sources [7][8][9] and [10] for some of the very best A/V related information when it comes to making an informed purchasing decision.
Finally, after all is said and done, if you find yourself strongly leaning toward purchasing an LCD TV or monitor then, all things considered, I highly recommend that you prioritize any of the new 120 Hz LCDs (for example JVC's new LT-37X987 LCD HDTV [11].) A word of warning: avoid those models of LCDs that utilize “Black Frame Insertion” or similar technology.
And for what it's worth, having been a long-time fan of 'light valves,' I strongly prefer 3-panel LCOS RPTVs and projectors (mostly Sony) as well as Pioneer's Elite or professional series plasma displays.
