I have a 40" Samsung TV and a Magnavox upconverting DVD player connected by an HDMI cable. When I examine a movie on it, the video is displayed shorter than it should be, so I have full-size black borders above and below, and the video is noticeably compressed vertically. I've tried using different output modes from the DVD player and different display modes on my TV, but nought seems to abet. Local HDTV signal shows up perfectly. Is near something that I should be doing differently? Thanks.
Answers: There could be a couple of things that could result is the picture looking compressed. The first setting you want to check is that the DVD player output is set to 16:9 as opposed to 4:3. Another piece may be if you have full blind movies versus widescreen movies. If the box doesn't specifically say next look for a picture ratio of either 1:1.85 or 1:2.35. Those are both widescreen ratio, if it isn't either of those, afterwards you have a full eyeshade movie and your player is stretching out the picture to make it into a widescreen picture. nother entry to consider is if the widescreen ratio is 1:2.35 you will still see black borders on the top and bottom of your widescreen TV because that ratio is a wider screeen than your widescreen.
A lot of films are shot larger then 16x9 thus the black lines.
