PC output to HDTV "Mode not supported" on TV?

I've got a 4 or 5 year out-of-date PC that I've upgraded now for relatively a few years. The graphics card is a 2/4x AGP 32 Meg card from ATI (Rage Fury Pro- not even supported by ATI anymore) and it's around 6-7 years old. I know this to be a bland link -- but it does support better resolutions on my PC screen (up to 1300 x 728 - or something similar to that.

When I connect the HDTV's PC connector to the vid card, the TV reports "mode not supported". BUT, I discovered if I drop down to 800 x 600.. It does work. It is LOUSY looking at best. FYI using a switch box back/forth from monitor to TV.

I don't want to spend plentifully of $$$... but what vid card would be the best? I want the interface to be from the computer to the PC slot on the TV, not DVI-i converters, etc. I am just looking to mirror the figure from the PC screen to the HDTV screeen. Running XP wth SP2.

BTW.. The HDTV is a 40 inch Samsung, 720p LCD. It say 'native resolution' is 1336 X 768

Answers:    Before you run out and buy a unusual video board, I suggest you get the encyclopaedia for your TV and find out what resolutions it will support through the PC port. If that answer satisfies you, next I suggest you look at the nVidia 7600 series boards. PNY seems to hold good prices on them. Your PC probably wants the AGP version-make sure you check what type you need and the power supply requirements.
