What is false contouring?

Can someone please educate me on what false contouring is on a plasma set? I am looking at a hard to please model, but a review on cnet says that in attendance false contouring. Is it a noticeable issue? Can it be solved by getting the plasma calibrate? Please let me know!
Thanks!

Answers:    False contouring is when colors are displayed slightly different than intended
It's a curbing of the 8-bit color depth
But 10-bit processing reduces false contouring and provides four times the number of color gradations as those of an eight-bit processor.
ISF technicians can make any level of calibration required on your video display, using specialized calibration equipment.
