15,000:1 or 10,000:1? Which is better on an lcd tv? Thanks.?

Answers:    A contrast ratio (CR) of 15000:1 is better than 10000:1 ... at least surrounded by theory. CR is, vitally, the ratio between the brightest white and the darkest black the screen can display. And the breater the ratio the more depth and "po" to the picture. Plasma usually beat LCD here. Note that CR is actually more defining than resolution for perceived picture quality.

The problem is that CR is measured mixed ways and because there is an incentive to quote difficult numbers manufacturers enjoy found innovative ways to justify better CR values. You could be harsh and say aloud they lie, but (most of the time) the numbers are probably correct next to a whole pile of caveat.

That said, look at the numbers -- they may help peak out poor performers -- but don't believe them short looking at the picture. It isn't unusual for an HDTV with a lower or almost one and the same CR rating to clearly have a better picture than another, abstractly better model.
