Question on HD tv's?

my husband just went to buy a hd tv... and the guy told him he couldn't "just buy" an HD tv.. he needed kinds of hook up stuff that would have ended up costing my husband another 600-1000 dollars?? is this true? we already have direct tv.. why can't you just plug it in like a regular tv or was this guy taking us for a ride?

Answer:
Buy one 1080i PTV Hitachi 51F59..$900.00
One Voom Satellite Box for Local HD$ 75.00
2 component cables $ 48.00
2 Optical cables for Dolby Surround $ 36.00

Total $ 1059.00

Now add ONE Satellite HD DVR upgrade $ 200.00
and OND HD DVD Toshiba HDA2 $400.00
That's an additional $600.00 for a GRAND TOTAL OF $ 1600.00 !!

NOW THAT's a FULL BLOWN setup. You can make adjustments/upgrades when you want them.

So, $85 in cables, and a HD satellite box (minimum) would be $285..not $600 to $1000 extra. AND don't buy those rediculous MONSTER CABLES.the lenght of line is too short to require that quality of cable...unless you're running it 30 feet or longer...

And cable upgrade is even less per month.
the answer is simple if you get a hd TV and you have a hd satelite box you'll need component cables for video (red, green and blue) and audio cables i don't see them running for than 100 at most, or you could run crappy hdmi.

seeing is how 1080p doesn't even exist yet, and most TVs use upscalers to artificially produce it. then go with hdmi. the only advantage to hdmi is if you're using a receiver to do 7.1 surround. hdmi is a cable the CEO of best buy came up with to make things easier to hook up for the average user. it doesn't mean it's good
he is taking you for a ride!

you can just plug it in!

But for better quality you need to upgrade the dtv box to HD (or the HD DVR box). Then connect it with HDMI (component is not as good on modern sets!). And anything you used to connect to the old set would be even worse!
We just bought a LCD HDTV and hooked it up to direct tv. You can plug it right in and it will work, but to get that great HD picture you see in the store you need get a HD receiver, satellite, and HD access from direct tv. We havent done that yet but have hooked it up to have a pretty good picture. We did play a DVD on it tonight and it looked great. Some of our channels were a little fuzzy but it is not that bad
