Can regular channels be improved on a HDTV?

I just recently purchased an HDTV that plays Blu-ray disks and PS3 beautifully. I upgraded to HD cable, using an HDMI connector and most of the high definition channels come in pretty good (some better than others). But the "standard - digital channels look like garbage! They are blurred and pixelated all over the place. My old "tube TV" plays the same channels twice as good! What gives?!!

Am I alone in this problem? Is it my cable company (Time Warner)? Is sattelite better? Can something be added or fixed to improve it? Please don't tell me that the clear picture just "shows" the defects more - That is not the case - This TV "creates" the defects - It is FAR worse than the old tube TV! There must be a solution. Everyone with a HDTV can't possibly accept this blurred crap after forking out thousands of dollars on a TV that is supposed to be an improvement over their old one, can they?

Answer:
We recently got HDTV from DirecTv, and the channels are NOT better. The shows in HD ARE much better, but the regular channels seem to be worse. Our old tv in the bedroom looks better than the good tv with the HD box in the living room...
No they can't. Unless the channel is being broadcast in HD you won't see any improvement in the regular cable/tv channels
If they show the program in HD then you will. Otherwise not.
Yes, they can. And it's free.. get yourself an outdoor antenna,
or a good set of rabbit ears.. and you'll be surprised with the results.

If you can receive the signal it comes in perfect..
You might TRY using the old style Composite cables coming out of your HD Cable box.that might settle it down.

HDMI was built for HD LCD or DLP/Plasma sets..your old TV signal may not like the conversion processes it must go through...

USE THAT CABLE ONLY FOR LOW DEFINITION TV STATIONS!
If you buy a Terk HD antenna it will pick up the Over The air High def channnels and make them a little better. But the best source is to buy the High Def service from your Digital Cable or Direct TV source
