Analog signal...what tv to buy?

I watch regular broadcast tv and don't plan on getting satelite or cable until I have to, but I do want a new (larger) tv, especially watching movies with my "standard" DVD player. I have heard that that the picture on an HDTV using an analog signal isn't good, but I haven't seen it in person. Is the picture really that bad? Does anyone have any recommendations as far as what type of tv I should buy (tube, crt, lcd, dlp, etc)? (Also, what's the deal with HD DVD's? What player do you need? Do they play regular, non-HD dvds?) Thanks!

Answer:
BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK..

Buy the Hitachi CRT Projection TV
Model 51F59 or 57F59 or 65F59
Cost is $800 for the 51 inch.

TRUE 1080i NATIVE resolution, that's the highest resolution you can get in ANY type of TV.

And.IT COMES with a Digital TUNER so you can get ALL your local TV stations, including the NEW channels that your OLD TV can't get.

Then you're all set up for Hi Def DVDs and Cable/Satellite WHEN you have the money to get it.
===============
THEN go to EBAY.look up "VOOM satellite" and buy one of those for $50. HD terrestrial recievers COST $200!! Save some money!
When you get it, hook it up to one of the COMPONENT input jacks on your TV, remove the locked cover, insert your Antenna into the RF jack and set up the reciever.

You should have HIGH DEFINITION LOCAL STATIONS.and if it doesn't get ANY stations, remove the Security Screws from the Voom box (I used my diagonal wire cutters to remove them) and find the ribbon cable where the RF connector is attached to the box. Press the ribbon connector socket Firmly..sometimes they "look connected" and they aren't ! Then autoprogram it again.you'll get your stations.
Well, I cannot answer all your questions, since I have digital cable. But I do have a HDTV, and it plays regular DVDs from a regular DVD player just fine.
The SD signal shouldn't look bad, it just will not look great. However, analog broadcasting is being phased out here in the US and probably in other places as well. Most TV's have digital tuners, so you can get a digital antenna to pick up those channels. CRTs are the old school models that weigh a ton and are huge; don't get those. LCDs are usually best for all purposes, though they aren't meant for having absolutely the best picture (still good though, you can pay $10,000 for a Pioneer Elite plasma if that's what you are looking for, which I doubt). HD DVD players like the Toshiba HD-A1 actually upscale your regular DVD's to HD quality, if you are interested. The HD DVD format is different than regular DVD and you need the special player and an HDTV.
now, analog tv's have a perfectly fine picture as long as you don't get them for 20 bucks at a yard sale.
lol!
but, I wouldn't reccomend getting one because they are going to be useless in 2009.
they are going to put out a requirement that you have a, "digital" tv.
also, don't be coaxed into a hd tv.
if you get one, it'll have great quality, but to get hd you need a tuner and I think special service from your tv provider if you have one.
They are usually a rip-off.
the best deal is to look for a 32 inch, "flat-screen" not completely flat, they're rip-offs too mattering by your budget and they usually get bad transistors.
just 32 inch flat screen digital tv for about $500.00
that is a good deal.
now for dvds.
if you get hd dvd's with an hd tv with hd service, you'll need either a blu ray disc or hd dvd compatibale dvd player.
they're very expensive and with a flat screen tv it should come out just fine without being in hd.
dont get a special dvd player.
just remember, digital, not analog.
Just make sure you get a digital tv and not analog, or else you won't be able to watch local broadcasts after Feb 2009.

See this link on why an analog tv won't pick up broadcast stations in 2009: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...
You could purchase a tv with an atsc tuner which is a TV that's able to pick up over the air digital broadcast. If you choose to go with a HDTV with a atsc tuner then you will be able to pick up hd for free, however it isn't offer through out the whole day but when its not offered you will be getting a lower digital signal like ed or SD. HD DVDs play both HD movies and regular DVDs. When connected to a HDTV the DVD will give you true hd when your using a hd movie if its a regular movie it will still play it and it will also upconvert the picture to hd quality.
