Rear-Projection LCD (LcOS) or LCD flat panel?
RP offers larger picture at lower prices. LCD flat panels are more expensive. What are your thoughts on bang for the buck versus longevity? Which offers the best long term value?
Answer:
I was in a similar situation recently, and after lots of research, I decided to go with the RP set (I chose a DLP set which was cheaper than SXRD). My recommendation for you is that if space is not a constraint and you don't have unlimited budget, go for the RP set. My reason is that cost-wise, even factoring in the cost of replacement bulbs, RP TVs are cheaper, and quality-wise, I think they are at least as good and often better than the flat panel models (e.g., for me, the screen-door effect was much more noticeable on LCD flat panels than on SXRDs or DLPs).
In terms of the life you can expect of LCD FPs, I think it's around 10 years.
One issue that discouraged me from buying a SXRD set (over a DLP set) is a green blob problem that seems to be a relatively common problem for SXRDs. I don't have a personal experience with this, but check out here for more information:
