I just bought a new 55" LG LCD and when I tried to hook it up this morning I ran into a small problem. Where I had to hang it the only electrical receptacle that was close would not work. I guess the people that had the house before had some kind of old appliance because the receptacle you plug into was weird. One of the holes was turned sideways from the other. I took it out and installed a regular receptacle. I did notice an extra wire on the old one that I just cut off because the new receptacle only had screws for 3. When I turned the TV on fire and smoke shot out of both the receptacle and the back of the TV. I think LG sold me a defective television?

NO.they didn't sell you a defective TV.
YOU rewired a 220 Volt recepticle with a 110 plug and used both 110 phases of the 220, rather than one of the 110 phases and the NEUTRAL line..that's the line you "just cut off".
A TV repair shop is what you need now, and maybe an electrician on your home wiring..
The repair shouldn't be too bad..Just let them know what you did so that the repairman KNOWS how to fix the problem.
I have had customers accidently do this and when they told me, I KNEW what was damaged and needed replacement. Parts were ordered and installed QUICKER !!
I love it when they come in and tell me its the power button and or power cord. A classic.
