Answerer number one is f.o.s. and obviously has either a vivid imagination, or is on something. HD is currently being broadcast on UHF channels, primarily. You can either get a UHF/VHF antenna (which is a bit larger) and be able to get all the broadcast stations, or get a UHF only antenna and get all the channels above 13 including the HD channels. Here are a couple of examples:

UHF (HD) only: http://www.winegard.com/offair/pdf/hd906...

I've installed one of their antennas and get everything from channel 3, up to 69 CLEARLY. And, I'm very satisfied with not having to pay cable or satellite. After February 2009, you won't be able to get non-HD signals, but who cares? High Def. will still be broadcast OVER THE AIR on UHF frequencies and, possibly, the recently vacated VHF frequencies. Don't ever listen to those bozos who say you won't be able to receive anything when HD takes over... that's pure BS. Think about it, if you were a broadcaster, wouldn't you want as many people to view your station as possible?
HD signals are not broadcast in the air like traditional TV signals, so you'll not get them via a regular TV antenna. Also, by 2010, all TV will be digital and go through cable or satellite. (the government decided this). If ever you find TV antennas still being sold, it's definitely going to be cheap since they'll be obsolete in 3 years.
You need a simple outdoor UHF/VHF antenna on a mast that can be placed above your roof top for best reception. To improve it get a rotator. Been there done that.
