Which is better between 1080i and 720p and why?
Answer:
Quite simply, 1080i will offer you higher resolution, but at half the framerate of 720p or 1080p. In NTSC countries, this means that instead of running at 60 frames per second, it will run at 30 frames per second. It's most noticeable in fast action scenes, sports, anything where there is alot happening very quickly. That being said, it is a personal preference thing, as many people won't even mind it.
It's also important to note that if you get a 1080i capable LCD television, you will guarantee that you will be watching your HDTV at it's highest quality, as HDTV channels today are either broadcasting in 720p or 1080i. If you got a 720p LCD television, all those 1080i broadcasts would be downconverted, which could effect picture quality.
Also, screen size and distance is always a factor when shopping for a new tv. Here is a chart that will give you an idea of what to look for: http://www.carltonbale.com/wp-content/up...
i'm asking myself the same question - here's the TV i'm gonna buy nxt week [hopefully].

this is what i've learn't from my time researching HDTV's:
720p is better for fast moving images [eg. racing games & ESPN/Sports]
1080i is better for movies & video clips [or somthing on screen not moving @ 100mph : )
hope this helps.
I just saw a TV with 720..the background and foreground details lack..DETAIL!!
I have a 1080i PTV..it certainly has a lot more DETAIL than 720 could ever Provide !
Interlaced or progressive will not "visually enhance" the picture as much as the 720 or 1080 will..
No satellite or Cable box will ever have 1080P.1080i is designed to give MAXIMUM detail in a smaller bandwidth, which saves TV stations POWER..
GOPAL is going to be sorely disappointed in that 720 resolution.it'll look clean, but IT won't have the razor sharp DETAIL his friends will get when they buy a 1080 NATIVE resolution TV.
As for high speeds, MY 1080 has yet to look goofy because its 1080i..I just saw a 720 TV about 2 hours ago, and I was not impressed looking at a HD TV signal on it.
ONE THING YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER IS THAT 1080i IS THE BROADCAST STANDARD.YOU'LL NEVER FIND ANYTHING BROADCAST AT 1080p. THE ONLY PLACE YOU'LL FIND IT IS BLURAY/HD DVD. FOR WHAT EVER THE REASON THE POWERS THAT BE DECIDED ON INTERLACE AS THE BROADCAST STANDARD IS BEYOND ME! BUT WE'LL HAVE TO LIVE WITH IT FOR THE NEXT 30 YEARS OR SO,UNTIL A NEW TV FORMAT IS INTRODUCED.
YOU CAN'T CHANGE THE SETTINGS ON WHATS BROADCAST. YOU WATCH IT HOW THE TV CHANNEL DECIDES. YOU CAN, HOW EVER CHANGE THE SETTINGS ON DVD PLAYERS THAT HAVE HDMI OUTPUTS. IF YOU FIND WHEN SET AT 1080i THERE'S A LOT OF STROBEING ON VERTICAL OR HORIZONTAL OBJECTS TRY THE 720p SETTING AND SEE IF THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE.
