can the apple tv work with non widescreen high definition tv sets? i have an aspect ratio of 3:4. will i just get the black bars on the top and bottom that i'm used to with all my widescreen content or will the apple tv interface get cropped? Or just not work altogether?

It works for me. I initially decided against getting the Apple TV since in all of Apple's descriptions it specificly mentions widescreen. But then I decided to give it a shot since other folks on the 'Net reported success.
But if you have an older 3:4 HD set, like my Panasonic then it should work. The only drawback is that standard 3:4 content plays with black bars on the sides as well as the top/bottom (with 1080i setting). I found other settings would distort the picture (bars on side but not top).
Otherwise, Apple TV works great on my 3:4 aspect HD TV.
