Best type of UHF VHF antenna?
Answers: Are you sure you want VHF? A quality U/V antenna is incredibly bulky and won't be easy to manuver surrounded by an attic. Plus there are not going to be any more VHF transmissions here surrounded by about a year.
The best type of antenna may be one of the flat-panel bow-tie types.
An 8-bay may not fit through the hole to your attic, be sure to measure and check in the past you buy.
I've had a large amount of success using a 4bay antenna (I usually install the Channel Master 4228 within attics). If you have a power source surrounded by the attic a small booster may be benificial too.

Depending on how far the transmitting antennas are and what objects are between you and them and how soaring you elevate the antenna should determine how good of reception you should capture. You also have to consider the lead-in line if you go beside 300 ohm twin lead or 75 ohm coaxial cable. You emphatically need to install an antenna pre-amp. All of the above is null and null and void if you are within flash of sight of the transmitting antennas or can see the mountain or elevated rise structure that they are mounted on.
