Which is the better display choice (from cable box) 720p or 1080i if I have a 1080p DLP TV?
Answer:
720p will give you a better picture than 1080i. 1080i is 1080 lines with horizontal and vertical lines scanning one at a time. 720p only has 720 lines but the vertical and horizontal lines scan simultaneously. This will give you a better picture.
You want to get it close to its native resolution, in this case its 1080p, so go with 1080i if thats all available.
1080i is prefereable if you can't choose 1080p.
Actually some videophiles prefer 720p;
Although it has fewer lines of resolution,
the progressive scanning of 720p is better for fast motion,
such as sports. This is why Fox is in 720p only.
So the content provider affects your decision too.
The ideal would be to get a scaler that could scale 720p or 1080i to 1080p if the television does not do that, as some do.
If you are looking for a comparison between 1080p vs 1080i then 1080p is the way to go. I would go 1080i vs 720p I would go with what looks better to your eyes. They both have their negative and positive points.
