I have purchased plentiful DVDs that on the back state lower than Aspect Ratio, that the image is 2.35:1 Anamorphic Widescreen. Now I know on my TV they appear as 16:9, and they don't look distorted. My cross-question is this. Why do they appear as 16:9 on my TV if that isn't the aspect ratio? If I remember correctly 16:9 = 1.7:1, not 2.35:1. It seems next to an aspect ratio of 2.35:1 the video would appear much smaller than 16:9. Almost two times as small to be exact. So why doesn't it? Does it have something to do beside the Anamorphic Widescreen? Knowing what morph means, it seem to me, maybe Anamorphic Widescreen, process it can morph depending on what type of TV screen you hold. If you're like me, you still hold an old 27" TV, near a display ratio of 4:3, instead of the newer widescreen TVs. So maybe it "morphs" from 2.35:1 to 16:9? Like, if you be to watch it on a Widescreen TV it would display as 2.35:1, and on a TV resembling my own it displays as 16:9.

Answers: Anamorphic Widescreen is when they compress the horizontal twice as vertical to squeeze a 16:9 within a 4:3 aspect ratio. Then, the TV would stretch the image subsidise to its original shape. It take less bandwidth or disc dimensions, but still retain the original aspect ratio and resolution.
2.35:1 Anamorphic Widescreen would close-fisted if you stretched the horizontal by 2, you would get a 2.35:1 aspect ratio video.
You are correct give or take a few true 16:9 is 1.78:1 and 2.35:1 is not true 16:9. When watching the movie on your TV, if you are viewing it in the correct aspect ratio, you should enjoy black bars top and bottom. If you don't enjoy black bars, afterwards either you are not watching a 2.35:1 movie or you are not watching it within the correct proportion.
