Will all tvs be required to be hd compatible in the next year or 2?
Answer:
No. Televisions will not need to be "HD Compatible" in the next year or two. In 2009 the federal government is going to take over the free over the air analog signal as part of the 9/11 commision report action items. They are freeing up that spectrim to accomidate a universal emergency response signal channel that all federal and local emergencey service will be able to communicate over. Here is the impact of this decision...
1.) If you use rabit ears to get your local chanels you will need to by a goverment paid for converter box. estimated price for you is fee because the fed has passed a law already to allow for anyone needing a converter box to get a $300 voucher. Current price for a converter box online right now is about $229 for a good one.
2.) If you have cable or satellite you will not have to do anything because you're not using an over the air signal.
Hope this clears this up for you.

Don't worry, you can still watch TV using your existing set.
The congress will give you a coupon for about $40 (not $300) to buy a converter with a digital tuner if you use over-ther-air only antenna.
