Will regular channels on my HDTV look better after getting set up for HD?

Regular channels don't have enough information being sent through the wires to merit an HDMI connection, but your HD channels do.
Regular channels don't look very good because they are broadcast in half the resolution of HD channels, so a better cord will not make a difference there.
If your TV is larger then 60in, you may want to get the right cables to get full use out of the HD channels.
Do you have reg,cable,or dig.cable now,or a TV antena?TV antena-you will have poor picture,reg cable is a lot better,but you may need a amplifier added to get rid of the fuzzys.Dig. cable made a 100% improvement{STILL USED AMPLIFIER],and two months ago went with Time Warner HD DVR cable{can not use amp.with dvr-oops!}and oh my god! I have turned in to a couch potatoe! I can`t help you with a dish set up,but cable-night and day diff.!HD is the only way to go! I have a 46" LCDHDTV ,when I go to some one eles house and TRY to watch there reg.tv,I can`t stand it,I don`t stay very long.Did this help much?
So you already have your television hooked up to Directv. You will need to add HD service of course. You will require a new HD receiver (or DVR) and dish as well. The new receiver may be provide a better standard picture (non HD) than your old one if it's several years old due to advances in electronics. My new receiver replaced a newer receiver so the standard picture stayed the same. Be aware that some HD TVs do not provide a good standard picture but these are usually off-brands. As for HD pictures, they are truly stunning. I've had Directv for 9 years years and believe that they provide the best quality transmissions. I recommend that you get the insurance for your receiver.
