I have a 52 inch Sony TV with a picture problem.?

Bought new in 98', still in great shape, not hd ready. Problem is the picture stays on for about 5 to 10 seconds then goes out, returns for 5 to 10 seconds then goes out again. Kind of annoying, any ideas? picture tube?

Answer:
I mean it's from demage in line scanning or in power supply.
get a new tv.
I actually used to work for Sony in tech support before all our jobs were outsourced to Asia. Anyway, it sounds like your TV needs to be serviced, although with the prices on TV's now and everything switching to high definition, it might be a better idea to just get a new TV.

With a TV that big you would probably need to hire someone to come to your home and fix it, and you will pay lots of money for that. By the time he's done fixing it, you could have probably spent almost the same amount on a newer, better TV anway.

Try unplugging the TV for a few moments and then plugging it back in. Also try connecting it directly into the wall if you are using some sort of surge protector. If that doesn't work it could be any number of problems.

Hope that helps.
Don`t sound like it is in great shape any more!Nine years old, might be time to replace.HDTVS are comeing down in price so fast{compaired to two years ago},they are realy getting to where every one can get one, even if you just buy a reg.hdtv{ I highly suggest LCDTV over PlasmaTV,then DLP,then regHDTVS,don`t wast your money on Plasma!A LCDHDTV you cant put in your will.
It might be..the SONY TVs have a circuit called the IK circuit...it monitors the brightness level of the picture tubes..

IF IT IS TOO LOW...the TV will blink the picture on.then off..ON..THEN OFF..

Sometimes they can be adjusted and provide several more years of service..other times the CRTs are just worn out due to excessive usage.
At 9 years, I wouldn't expect it to be worn out, especially when MOST TVs will last about 12 to 15 years AVERAGE.

If you can get another 3 years out of it, THEN you can INVEST in one of those DLP/LCD TVs..WITH THE SOLID STATE LAMPS THAT WILL LAST LONGER THAN THE MERCURY VAPOR LAMPS !! That's what you want to STRIVE FOR.

My Mitsubishi PTV lasted 18 years! But I was forced to prematurely purchase a NEW Hitachi 51F59 Projection CRT TV..I really was waiting for the Solid State DLP to get a couple years on them..
But I bought the BEST technology.CRT projection is MORE reliable than any other technology, and cost of repair is LESS than any other..

So get a tech out and get it adjusted.
If he can't make the blinking qo away, then purchase a Hitachi Projo.or a Mits.
I don't like seeing $600 to $1200 repairs on LCD/DLP/PLASMAS, it makes my customers UNHAPPY..
