The speakers on my 4 year old Phillips TV are pretty much shot.?

I have purchased a good wireless headset for myself and they work great. Recently I attached a pair of inexpensive (40 watt) speakers and with an adapter plugged them into the same headphone jack I have been succesfully using. The volume on them was so low I returned them. I have been speaking with sales people in electronic stores who all say I need a transmitter to get speakers to work from that plug. I can't believe that I have to have one!? If I buy speakers with higher wattage will they work? Any suggestions?

Answer:
Yep you need a pre-amp...try radio shack...you should be able to get one there for about $20...good luck.
SPEAKERS are not DESIGNED to use the HEADPHONE JACK...Headphones are!

Look on the BACK of the TV..is there a set of SPEAKER output connectors? USE THEM instead.

<<OR>>

LOOK for a set of AUDIO OUTPUT jacks...Use those outputs with a POWER AMPLIFIER to drive your speakers.THAT's the way the TV was built.
