My THOMPSON television fell and wont function.?

I have a normal tv, non plasma/lcd or wtv, which fell from the piece of furniture it was placed on and now it won't switch on.

Is there something i can check and possibly fix something before taking it to a specialist?

Answer:
Did you see what direction it fell and how it landed? If it fell on face I would suggest dropping it again onto its back and see if that will undo the problem.
it's probably landfill now..Dig deep and treat yourself to a new LCD
No. Not being able to switch on says it all, you probably broke the bulb or damage a circuit board
Well you have had a crop of crackpot answers, here is the benefit of my lifetime fixing TVs.
When a Tv is dropped from a height the heaviest parts try to tear loose and crack the circuit board that they are soldered to ! First is the flyback transformer which is the one with the heavy leads that go to the crt bowl ! look underneath the transformer and you will be sure to see the damage, Now if lady luck is smiling on you then you will only have to resolder the transformer and maybe repair a couple of broken tracks.
How ever if lady luck has slapped you in the face then there will be lots of fine print tracks broken.
However here is the good news ! the pic tube is unlikely to be damaged as they are very tough . I hope lady luck is kind to you ! Cheers Pete
Well the board is likely broken on the TV and the only way to fix it is to JUMPER the copper trails that were Broken..

And there could be a whole bunch of trails broken..
You would need some wire, a wire stripper/cutter, solder and a good fine point Soldering iron..and maybe a jeweler's loupe (for the tiny trails) and a continuity tester like a ohm meter!

You don't want to jumper one point to a WRONG point !
It may take several hours of work..

MOST Damage is around the BIG HEAVY Tranformers, especially the Hi Voltage transformer..that's the one that the Wire with the Suction Cup attaches to the picture tube.

HOWEVER..It is MORE COST EFFICIENT to take the TV to the SPECIALIST and pay the Diagnosis Charge, because it's a minor charge to let them see how much it would cost you.

PLUS they have all the equipment purchased already, and you don't have to spend a MINIMUM of 100 pounds for equipment when the diagnostic is about 35 to 45 pounds!!
