Whats the difference between a plasma tv and an lcd tv, which has more long life and good pic quality??

Answer:
Both are "fixed pixel displays". That is they both create the picture by each single pixel getting the information and displaying it on screen. An LCD tv uses liquid crystals for each pixel that twist to allow light through and creates the picture (like those on your laptop screen or ipod screen). Plasma TVs use little gas filled chambers that light up when an electrical pulse activates them. There are 3 colored chambers and depending on the color, each lights up.
If you want to know WHICH to buy... use this
If you like fast action movies or sports, you will definitely want a plasma. If you sit further away and like to watch movies and want to save money, go for the LCD.

As for long life. You probably will hear people say that the life of a plasma is limited to 60,000 hours or something like that. Most of those stats are that if you watched 6 hours a day every day it would take something like 20 years or more to burn out. You'd have bought a new TV before then
Another note. If you play video games and are trying to save money, you might want to stay away from plasmas. While the high end plasmas have fixed the problem, less expensive models can burn in static pictures (like scores).
Another note. LCDs that will come out in 2008 will have faster "refresh rates". Just know that means that the feathering that happens from fast action will be decreased and they will do better with sports.
Which has a longer life will depend on the specific model of TV, but I think Plasma have generally better picture quality.

A plasma display panel is a type of flat panel display now commonly used for large TV displays (typically above 32"). Many tiny cells located between two panels of glass hold an inert mixture of noble gases (neon and xenon). The gas in the cells is electrically turned into a plasma which then excites phosphors to emit light. It is often used in the home environment and is becoming increasingly popular in modern cultures.

Liquid crystal display television is television that uses LCD technology for its visual output. The technology used is generally TFT. In the early 2000s, LCD flat-panels captured a large part of the computer monitor market from traditional CRTs. Continuing advances in LCDt TV technology enable it to compete against Plasma flat panels and rear-projection televisions (DLP, LCD, and LCoS) for large-screen HDTV.
Plasma are filled up with gas, eventually this gas will burn up, this is technically the end of the tv. When they first came out their life span wasnt that great, nowdays they are more reliable specially Panasonic which offers 60,000 hours of life for the device, in plain english about 18 to 20 years if nothing happens before.
LCD are the best choice, they are fully reparable and more reliable. They are in a way computer monitor but with some adaptations to broadcast television signal with a built in tuner.
If you are about to decide, my best advice is go LCD and you wont regret it, enjoing one of the most sharpest pictures possible.
One more thing, Plasma get a lot of glare while LCD works just fine in enviroments with lots of light of glare like big windows, lamps and any other source of light. If you have a chance to compare both TV's shut them down and you will see a mirror on the plasma and a dark surface on the LCD.
i have a 42" lg plasma and i think its great even for the xbox lcd and plasma both got about the same lifespan,
as long as you remember NOT to leave it on standby over night or when you don't use it, turn it off at the socket and it WILL last a lot longer.
but, theres always the "sods law"
a component could easily go in any of them, as you have to remember there all electrical things in the end, and something has to give eventually.
if you can afford it get a long warrenty, but you always have you accidental household insurance policy

i hope this helps

The ADVANTAGES of Plasma over LCD are:

1. Larger screen size availability.

2. Better contrast ratio and ability to render deeper blacks.

3. Better color accuracy and saturation.

4. Better motion tracking (little or no motion lag in fast moving images).

The DISADVANTAGES of Plasma vs LCD include:

1. Plasma TVs are more susceptible to burn-in of static images.

2. Plasma TVs generate more heat than LCDs, due to the need to light of phosphors to create the images.

3. Does not perform as well at higher altitudes.

4. Shorter display life span (about 30,000 hours or 8 hrs of viewing a day for 9 years) than LCD. However, screen life span is improving to as high as 60,000 hours. due to technology improvements.

LCD television ADVANTAGES over Plasma include:

1. No burn-in of static images.

2. Cooler running temperature.

3. No high altitude use issues.

4. Increased image brightness over Plasma.

5. Longer display life (about 60,000 hours - at which time all you may need to do is replace the light source, not the entire set). This can vary according other environmental and use factors.

6. Lighter weight (when comparing same screen sizes) than Plasma counterparts.

DISADVANTAGES of LCD vs Plasma televisions include:

1. Lower contrast ratio, not as good rendering deep blacks.

2. Not as good at tracking motion (fast moving objects may exhibit lag artifacts) - However, this is improving.

3. Not as common in large screen sizes above 42-inches as Plasma. However, the number is growing fast, with some LCD sets having a screen size as large as 65-inches now available to the general public.

4. Although LCD televisions do not suffer from burn-in susceptibility, it is possible that individual pixels on an LCD televisions can burn out, causing small, visible, black or white dots to appear on the screen. Individual pixels cannot be repaired, the whole screen would need to be replaced at that point, if the individual pixel burnout becomes annoying to you.

5. LCD televisions are typically more expensive than equivalent-sized Plasma televisions (although this is changing), especially when comparing EDTV Plasmas to HDTV-LCD Televisions.
