What is wrong with my Samsung DLP television?
Changed the bulb and now we get a black and white picture with a loud hum. This sounds like the color wheel perhaps? Is there anything else that could cause these symptoms? I would like to verify the problem before I tear the TV apart to get to the color whee.

any popping you could hear would be in a electrolytic capacitor and ones large enough to hear are in the power supply. due to the high voltages/current in that portion of TV not recommended to fix yourself. take to a qualified service center.
Yes the problem , like jason said is samsung.
Samsung is one of the worst brand out there to buy tvs from, them and phillips/walmart tvs.
Poping noise,hum, sounds like something in the power supply.
Just about all samsungs are problem tvs.
So now you get a picture, buts its in black and white. Means its not the color wheel, if it was stuck/non functional youd only display 1 color.
Do not take it apart if you never done a DLP before. Take it to a repair shop.
There are 3 POSSIBILITIES...
1] You bumped/removed the COMPONENT CABLING and your Audio connectors are not pressed in firmly, causing AUDIO HUM, and your Pr Pb cables are not pressed in firmly causing NO COLOR.
2] IF that hum is present all the time AFTER verifying ALL cables are properly seated..it MAY BE a blown filtering capacitor and would require the expertise of a technician...
3] THE COLOR WHEEL can get a dry bearing..however the color wheel MUST START UP FIRST before the lamp lights..and you would HEAR the higher pitched "Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" if it was the cause.BEFORE the PICTURE OR SOUND ever came alive !
So...when does the HUM start?
Right when it comes on? (power supply)
Right after the "Doodle lee do" of the "start up tones"? (power supply)
Right after the startup "weeeeeeeee" of the Color wheel? (color wheel)
Right after the LAMP LIGHTS? (Ballast for the lamp)
Right after the PICTURE and SOUND appear? (power supply again).
