What does High Definition TV mean?

Answer:
High Definition means that the resolution of the picture on the screen is higher than "standard" definition - i.e. old-fashioned TV's, the kind we've used for 50 years.

Standard resolution is 480 lines down the screen, 720 dots across on each line, displayed in interlaced fashion (see the link below for an explanation).

High Definition is at least 720p - 720 lines x 1280 dots per line, progressively scanned. The best HD is 1080i and 1080p, which shows 1080 lines x 1920 dots per line on the screen, interlaced or progressive.
