My TV has a single horizontal line across the screen unless you hit the side, then it works for a few seconds.

Answer:
your picture tube is going out
Sounds like you picture tub is going out.
hmmmmm...hate to say it, but sounds like ya need a new one? i guess give it a day or more and see if it gets better on it's own?
You need to let somone who knows what they are doing answer this question. What is happening is the solder connections the the vertical output I.C are cracked do to heat and age. when you smack your set you move those connections a little bit, just enough to make connection again. if this goes on for too long you will burn out that I.C all you need to do is find the vertical I.C and resolder the connections on the bottom of the board. If you are not comfertable with it then let a TV tech do it.
Keep on hittin' it, baby.
(ease off during the commercials)
Could be the particulate capacitor. But perhaps the tube..I'm not sure. Unplug it before you work on it.and PUT DOWN THAT glass of water.
your tv is old..mine does the same thing, because its old.
Really? Your TV must be 25 years old. I didn't know TVs still went on the fritz like that. Now might be time to invest in a new, flat-screen TV with Tivo.
that used to happen to are t.v before we bought a new one.
i'm pretty sure that's because its old and its geting sick :-D.
u should buy a new one.
your tv might need resoldering, my hubby is a certified technician, he said try to find a reputable technician, tell him to resolder the vertical IC output. Don't try it yourself if you do not have experience in opening a tv, you might get a very serious electrical shock of your life.
Youre vertical IC has bad connections and possible of a capacitor most of the JVC's have just bad conncetions I work on them and I have fixed many of them in the past.
Hands up all those who said dry joints on vertical IC ! all those people have given a good answer ! all the others are " what we call in the trade " wankers " .
Cheers Pete
I have worked in the repair industry since 1975. I am so sick of hearing "the picture tube is bad", it almost makes me laugh ever time I hear that now. To anyone who said cold, or bad solder connections on the vertical output IC or transistors is probably right. It's that or the power supply line from the high voltage transformer to the vertical output stage has bad connections. Either way you look at it, it probably need to be soldered. Any shop worth half their weight in cow pucky would jump all over such a simple job. Where are you located? if you are near south central TN bring it to me, heck I would welcome some "gravy" work!
