Is cable required to have HDTV?

TV will switch to digital from analog in 2/09. I don't have cable. I hear I will have to buy new TVs, but will I also have to buy cable service?

Answer:
yes...its all about money for the cable companies again!!
YEAH c'mon thats like common knowledge
Do you have a HD ready tv??

if you do you MAY have a HDMI they are brilliant for giving the best quality in gaming i know that but i dont know about SKY HD and other TV programs.
You can buy an HD antenna. It isn't free to buy the equipment, but there is no monthly fee like cable or satellite.
You will just need to buy a new TV tuner. You won't "have" to buy new TV's. Most TV stations will still be broadcasting over the air, so you shouldn't have to buy cable. and no cable is not required to carry HDTV, they are just doing it to compete by giving a better picture.
I called Shaw cable they said no.
No, major networks are broadcasting digital and HDTV signals over the air. I can get 5 stations locally with just a set of rabbit ears. I can also get the same feeds on my non-HD cable subscription from Time Warner.
