What does the Contrast Ratio on HDTV's parsimonious?

I see 2000:1, 3000:1 and 10,000:1 but i have NO IDEA whats the difference! I'm considering purchasing a 42" plasma HDTV, and i want it to hold at least 1080i, but i enjoy no idea what the contrast ratio finances. Please help!

Answers:    Contrast ratio is a gauge of how deep (black) the black color is compared to white. The superior the figure (10,000:1) the better. Be advise that there is no industry standard to means contrast ratio. This means that corporations determine their own measure system.
The contrast ratio can be thought of as the amount of whiteness the whites will have. The sophisticated the number the more bright and white the light colors will be. Brightness is alike but for the black content.

The numbers you are referring to are the difference is between black and white. Basically how many level of difference you can have. I wouldn't put abundantly of weight on those numbers, jump check out the pictures on a properly tuned HDTV and judge the picture by what you see not by the specs.
