What is the difference between an LCD TV and a Plasma TV?
Answer:
Both are "fixed pixel displays". That is they both create the picture by each single pixel getting the information and displaying it on screen. An LCD tv uses liquid crystals for each pixel that twist to allow light through and creates the picture (like those on your laptop screen or ipod screen). Plasma TVs use little gas filled chambers that light up when an electrical pulse activates them. There are 3 colored chambers and depending on the color, each lights up.
If you want to know WHICH to buy... use this
If you like fast action movies or sports, you will definitely want a plasma. If you sit further away and like to watch movies and want to save money, go for the LCD.
Another note. If you play video games and are trying to save money, you might want to stay away from plasmas. While the high end plasmas have fixed the problem, less expensive models can burn in static pictures (like scores).
Another note. LCDs that will come out in 2008 will have faster "refresh rates". Just know that means that the feathering that happens from fast action will be decreased and they will do better with sports.
lcd- liquid crystal display is way better b/c it's more for your mone;, plasma is found 40 in + and is a solid state and sucks to transport b/c you have to keep it upright and loses brightness after 5 + years!
LCD is based on Liquid Crystals sandwiched between the screen. LCD handles bright scenes and environments better than plasma, but older and cheaper models do not perform well on SD.
Plasma is a phosphor based TV, which means it is suceptible to burn-in issues. Plasma handles dark environments and scenes better, with a higher contrast ratio than LCD's. Perform well on SD.
Rear Projection TV's are based on many different types. LCD, which is similar to flat panels, use a bulb for illumination that should be replaced every four years. DLP uses micromirrors to display an image, and also uses a bulb. LCoS uses a panel similar to LCD, but is placed on silicon to produce darker blacks. These sets have a lower bulb expectancy, down to about 2-3 years, and are much more expensive. I have an LCD Rear-Projection by Sony (KDF-E42A10), and I am very, very happy with it. The performance on SD and HD is comparable to CRT's. Check it out on Amazon or other rating sites, and it almost ALWAYS gets rave reviews from its customers. Sadly, it is now replaced by a newer model (KDF-42E2000). However, it is said to perform just as well.
Plasma has better picture and can't be beat when set up correctly. LCD's are cheaper but have a decent picture. They CAN last longer than a plasma. The problem with LCD's is that the LCD panels get a haze over them after some time due to the heat from the lamp.
Plasma is better.
