Tv goes black?
Answer:
The problem could be two things, either a picture tube or bad conncetions on the vertical IC. The vertical IC is about 8-10 pin IC near the centrer of the main board. The IC will have bad connections on it. Check prices of new TV's before taking it to get it fixed.
goes black as in no video and no sound?
sound without video?

edit: in responce to the last post, what he said is MOSTLY true
but i've repaired tvs many times, my first when i was only 14 years old
if you read repairfaq's tv safety section you should be fine, just stay away from the picture tube and wires going to it, it isnt likely your picture tube is at fault, stick your tongue onto the hv lead coming from the flyback, if you can still talk then you are getting voltage, if not im guessing your tv's hv protection circuit is kicking in, a can of cold shot can help diagnose the problem or failing that, try operating the tv open with fan/airconditioning behind it

Look in yellow pages for a local TV repair man.Do not take the first quote.Good Luck
I think the problem is you spend more time on the internet and your television has becoem jealous
I had a tv to do that several years ago, if I recall I was told it was the picture tube. Our tv would go black but you could still hear the sound. We paid a guy to fix it and a couple of days later it started doing the same thing again, finally it went completely out.
Your picture tube is going out. It's cheaper to buy a new TV, or you can just put up with it until it goes out completely. My TV is doing the same thing, I'm just too lazy to replace it.
Tube has gone, time for a new telly.
could be caused by the low voltage regulator or separate switching supply, it could be cycling on and off if the horizontal output, flyback, or one of its secondary loads is defective.
It can be fixed, however it is cheaper to get a new tv these days rather than the cost of parts and labor to repair your tv.
The problem sound a lot like there is a bad connection
to the filament of the picture tube, this does NOT mean
that your picture tube is going out, it simply means that
when the set is cold the connection has a bit more resistance
causing the filament voltage to drop, once warmed up the
resistance drops to a sustainable value.
It can also be an electrolytic capacitor that bleeds off
the voltage, again once warmed it is stabilized.
If you can see the neck of the picture tube with the cover
on the set, you may be able to witness the filament
going dim (no light).
It is best just to call a serviceman and get an estimate
to repair
It is highly unlikely the tube is bad. When a picture tube goes bad the color is all red, blue, green, yellow, orange, purple, or gets dark gradually over time and you can't adjust the brightness.
There is most likely some other part in the picture tube circuitry that is going bad. A capacitor, ic, transformer etc.
Definitely do NOT attempt to get into the back of the set. It can not only be dangerous but can make an easy repair a major repair.
DO call a service center (if you have more than one - call them all) and see if they charge for an estimate (most will) and what their rates are. Then explain to them what you have (screen size - model - found on the back of the set if you can get to it) and the problems it is having. Try a hard reset (unplug the tv for a half hour then plug it back in and try it) before you call. We have a lot of customers whose tv's will lock up or do weird things that a hard reset will fix.
Depending on the age, condition, and repair needed the tech may recommend replacement.
Good luck.
Justgetitright has got it right and saved me from typing the same reply !
