I am looking to get a up to date HD TV, and saw these while researching. Thanks in advanced.
Answers: The difference is that the i mode interlaced, and the p means progressive. It's a long story that have to do with tv's 50 years ago one unable to do adjectives of the lines from top to bottom, so they interlaced the lines. on a screen their might be 500 lines. so, the tv would first put lines 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, etc on the eyeshade, followed by 2, 4, 6, 8, etc. So they called that interlacing. the progressive format is a moment ago that, progressive! the screen starts beside line 1, afterwards 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, ect.
progressive is superior with out a doubt! the difference between HD DVD and Blu sunbeam is that Blue ray discs hold more information. both can do 1080p resolution. BUT, blue shaft of light has more dvd's beside the highest resolution (1080p). 1080p resolution is 1920X1080. 720p resolution is 1280X720. if you don't hold a tv over 50 inches, you probably won't be able to speak about the difference.
basically it's two different companies that don't want to contribute into the other. blue ray is superior to HD DVD, but is more costly. another entry to keep within mind is that HD dvd's can be played by xbox 360. blue ray can be played by playstation 3. xbox is method more popular, so my bet is that that HD DVD will win out.
1080p means the TV have 1080 lines in the picture, and the "p" stands for progressive. Progressive restores respectively line at equal time, "i" TV's restore each dash of resolution in an alternate guide. So in a "p" tv, respectively line is re-energized at the same time, "i" is revitalized half at one point, partially the other. Progressive TV's will be more clearer because of this. And since there are more lines of resolution surrounded by a 1080 tv, vs a 720 tv, the 1080 will obviously be clearer.

simple lay man lingo:
to the human eye, you will only see a difference on a HDTV over 40 inches big. interlaced 1080i it is not extremely noticeable on smaller screen. when the picture is STRETCHED over 40 inches, then that little "p" will hold on to the picture smooth and clean. ;-)
Blu-ray discs are the ONLY true high-def discs within 1080p. (by the way 4 outta 5 big movie studios enjoy moved to Blu-ray and ignored HD DVD). for a eyeshade over 40 inches, you might want a 1080p LCD for the sharpest cleanest picture. however all current HD TV channel are only 720p, not 1080p, and they will probably not dance to 1080p.
so choose what your new TV will be used for: HD stations, movies, or games.
