How does the type of dish you have affect satellite reception?

If I have a large dish 30" in diameter from a generic manufacturer and subscribe to Dish Network, can I use the dish that I already have or would I have to use Dish Network's dish? What difference does it make, if any?

Answer:
It depends on what you're watching. If you're watching international channels, most likely your 30" is what you need (or a Superdish if you want to spend more).

If you're not watching international stuff, use another LNB or get a Dish-dish with multiple LNB's if you need them (to receive multiple satellites/more channels).

BTW, 30"'s get great reception..but are more prone to movement due to wind (depending on how it's installed/mounted).
It depends on if the dish is a Ku band type dish and you can find that out by looking at the LNB at the end where the cable hooks up. With dish using 2 sateliites for programming I would just get one of the 20" eliptical dishes and be done with it.
