Answers: 1080p provides the highest aboriginal resolution within the HDTV spec. As one personage said, it's due to the technology using a higher pixel density than a 720p set. That amounts to more addressable (and smaller) individual points of pallid on the screen.
However, despite 1080p have the potential to provide a somewhat better picture........no broadcasting source will deliver a 1080p signal (at least not for some time0.that includes cable And SAT. These providers are still struggling to provide more 720p/1080i broadcasts due to bandwidth -or- "how much digital information can I cram into my FCC-alloted signal."
1080p will solitary "shine" if you purchase and use an Hi-Def DVD player such as a Blu Ray or HD-DVD system. The only other device I know of that provides a true 1080p signal is the Sony PS3 gaming console (which includes a Blu Ray player.)
So......for the time person, I think you'd be merely as far ahead to pay a lower price for 720p and gather the extra $$, or put it into a bigger or better set, than jumping on the 1080p "group wagon."
NOTE: With adjectives due respect, the previous respondent is incorrect regarding the number of scan lines. 1080 lines remains impossible to tell apart. The "p" refers to progressive scan, whereas each of the 1080 column are simultaneously refreshed at a constant rate - the "i" refers to interlaced, whereas 1/2 (or 540 lines) are revived, followed by a quick (virtually invisible) second animate for the reamining 540 lines.
