Do I need a high definition TV?

We need a new TV. A salesman told us that in about a year all broadcast will be in HD and that if we got a Standard Def we would eventually need an additional unit to convert the signal. Is this true?

Answer:
NOT TRUE. In 2009, the FCC has mandated that all broadcasters switch to DIGITAL broadcasting. Although digital - they aren't required to be in HD.

IF you recieve your tv signal via antenna then you will need a convertor box. If you receive your tv signal via cable then I wouldn't worry about it. The cable company will make sure you have the right box.

So what should you buy? If you want HD then you will need to buy an HDTV. Howver if you are happy with the regular tv and are getting your signal via cable, then I'd go with the regular set.
Yes you need one! I have one cuz my b/f bought it and I love it! BTW we are now married
You only need an HD TV if you are going to watch lots of movies and a lot of tv. The HD signal is more pixels. This means the the picture is usually clearer. However, I would NOT recommend an HD TV unless you have an HD tuner right now.. The tv will distort standard cable and satellite signals because it is made to play HD quality. I made the mistake of being lured into buying a warranty for my tv because a salesman lied and told me that the bulb would go out in the tv and it would be worth my money to buy the warranty. Usually salesmen are there to sell as much as they can. They are paid commission, so they will tell the customer anything and even lies to make a sale. If I were you I would go with what is in my budget range. The technology of HD is far from becoming completely dominant. Good Luck!
If you were to buy the standard def. television, then yes you would eventually have to buy the converter whenever you decided to upgrade. Now more and more broadcasting stations are upgrading to HD. They now have HD Radio, so i think it is safe to say in about a year or so, most, if not all broadcast will be in HD. I would go ahead and buy the HDTV that way i would be prepared if this were to happen...its better to be safe than sorry! I hope this helps, and good luck.
You will not need to buy an additional unit to convert the signal. All HDtv already convert the signal. BUT, buy the hdtv. You will not be dissapointed. HDtv brings a whole new facet into wathcing tv. And to the guy that said he bought the warranty, your bulb WILL wear out. Yes, it might still work in a couple of years, but the brightness and quality will be diminished. And, when your bulb does go out, plan on spending 200-300 dollars on a new bulb plus installation if you are not very electronic savvy.
yes its true...when they switch to HD if you still have an older tv you will need a converter to watch tv.
