What is the difference between 1080p and 720p.?

I am looking at a 50" plasma but its a 720p rather than a 1080p. It will cost approx $1400, is it worth it or should I spend one and the same on a smaller 1080p.

Answers:    I think it's worth the 1080p upgrade, it allows for more definition and if you seize an high-definition movie player or a gaming console you'll want to get the best picture possible. That have been said, don't get hold of a screen that's too small for your space. Use the rule of 4x. Sit 4 times the peak size away from the screen for optimum picture point.
Oh you should spend the same on a smaller 1080p tv. 1080p tvs hold brighter screens than 720p tvs do. The effect of a 1080p tv is much better than a 720p. Believe me, I hold a 60 inch 720p thats 2-3 years old (they didnt hold 1080 back then). My friend have a 50 inch 1080p tv and it looks cool...
